Letter to the Editor: Questions abound on IVGID alcohol vote
I am not aware of any area at the beaches which will accommodate the sale of alcohol. Are we looking at new buildings? Will IVGID have cocktail waitresses roaming the beaches? Will the young students working at the food venues have to lose their jobs to older bartenders? There are a lot of legal issues with young people working in the same location where alcohol is being sold. Will IVGID have separate beverage service to the parking lots and sidewalks for the "free expression folk" or will they be excluded from the service? Will there be new wrist bands for drinkers and non-drinkers; separate beach areas for a drinker?
Will IVGID be hiring a full-time police force to deal with "drunken swimmers"? Will IVGID need to apply for a special liquor license for the beach properties? I believe anytime you sell alcohol at a venue you need to apply with the state liquor board. It will be interesting to see how this will be accomplished. Or will IVGID simply use its curren

A seaport asks for another kind of bounty
The cash-strapped town of Gloucester, Mass., portrayed in ‘The Perfect Storm,’ contends that it’s a high-risk terrorist target and entitled to Homeland Security money.
Gloucester has sent men to the sea in ships — whalers, schooners, dories and more — for nearly four centuries. A seaside memorial here enshrines the names of more than 5,300 mariners who never returned, lost to howling nor'easters and monstrous waves, including the doomed swordfishing crew portrayed in the film "The Perfect Storm."

Letter to the Editor: Those cryin' math blues
Your kid ever cried over math? I see it all the time. So imagine my surprise last week. I was working with a brand new member of the Boys and Girls Club in Power Hour, our after-school tutoring program. First time I've ever seen this little girl. She's very shy. We're struggling along with math.
In walks mom. Little girl runs to mom's arms and starts crying. Mom leads her from the room. I figured I'd been the cause of another little kid crying over math. Mom brings kid back in the room about 10 minutes later. I took the opportunity to take mom aside and apologize for making her little girl cry over math on her very first day at the Boys and Girls Club.
Mom tells me: 'Oh, she wasn't crying because of the math; she loves math. She was crying because she thought I was there to take her home, and she wanted to stay at the club!' Little girl is now one of my regulars in Power Hour.
Want your kid to have a great day? Bring him/her to the Boy
