Lake Tahoe Review - Business

Ron Stanger and the Science of Local Business

By Lynn Berardo On 30.03.09

What is a science teacher doing running the local independently owned supermarket? The truth is he took over a family business and every day fulfils a passion for food and wine.  It’s a rare, gloomy and grey day in Incline. It’s raining. Perhaps that’s why Ron says his favorite dishes to cook are comfort foods —“I like techniques like braising and I have always been the cook in my family.”  We sit in Art’s Coffee House and Ron Stanger, owner of the Village Market, tells me “cooking is a science.”

Ron moved to Incline in 1980 and worked for his stepfather Phil Kiper, the previous owner of the Village Market. In 2002, he purchased the market and took over the business. Prior to this, Ron spent three years in Portland, Oregon, was raised in Cupertino, CA, and was a high-school science teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area at Blackford High School in Campbell School District. When he’s not running the Village Market he can be found skiing, golfing and swimming in The Lake in summer. While he’s never taken part in the Polar Bear Swim, he has completed the swim from Alcatraz to mainland San Francisco and I think swimming in Lake Tahoe qualifies Ron for hardy polar bear status!

Businesses battle in 'Clovers for ...

By Staff Reports On 16.03.09

Pet Network’s “Clovers for Rovers” has taken on a life of its own at two local dog-crazy businesses.  Pak Mail in the Raley’s Shopping Center has issued a challenge to Rainbow Printing & Office Supply to see which business is Clover Craziest!  Each business is extending its participation in “Clovers for Rovers” until the end of March.

“If you go into either store, bring your dollars because both are determined to win this competition. When you walk into either store they are literally covered in clovers” said Becky Goodman, Pet Network’s Executive Director. “We are having so much fun with this. It is amazing how Incline Village, and especially Rainbow Printing and Pak Mail have embraced Clovers for Rovers.”

Clovers will be available at both locations until March 31.  To date the program has raised several hundred dollars for Pet Network’s rescue and rehabilitation efforts.

Pet Network is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that relies on the generous donations and support of the community to continue their life-saving work of rescuing, rehabilitating, and adopting homeless and neglected animals into loving homes.  Pet Network has adopted more than 6,500 animals since its inception in 1991.
