An art gallery for everyone

That changed, however, last week when a gallery space opened that is not only for every student, but organized by students as well.
“It isn’t just about student work,” said sophomore, Logan Lape. “It’s about students running a gallery.”
SNC’s newest club, the Student Gallery Club, will periodically feature pieces submitted by any students who wish to participate in the third floor hallway of Prim Library.
Those students who choose to join the club will also be able to further enrich their understanding of the gallery process. Kat Hutter, who is adjunct-faculty within the art department, coordinator for the Tahoe Gallery and advisor to the Student Gallery Club, pointed out the significant learning possibilities for everyone involved.
“Another objective, I would say equally important, is getting students in the club experience with what it takes to make a show work,” she said. “The installation of it, the advertising and communication… it’s really important, and its stuff you don’t really learn in school.”
Students who wish to have their work shown must first sign up and then submit their work at the club meeting the week of a gallery opening. Regardless of whether or not there will be an opening, the Student Gallery Club meets every week on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m., in the sculpture room on the first floor of David Hall.
Each exhibition will last about two weeks and while the criteria for the first show will be “flexible,” subsequent openings will require participants’ work to be screened before it can be accepted, as the gallery space is a public area.
Thus far, the students involved in the Student Gallery Club have an optimistic outlook on the gallery’s future and are motivated to make it succeed.
“It’s just really positive for students to be running their own club and it will teach us a lot about how to run a space,” said junior Babs Laukat, “and that’s important to know for when we’re out of school, if we want to do that on our own.”
Students who are interested in participating in this opportunity to show their work can find sign-up sheets throughout the campus or send e-mails to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
