Start raking pine needles, free collection week is May 25-29

Written by Staff Reports Wednesday, 08 April 2009 19:47

Pine needle recycling will begin May 1 with the Incline Village General Improvement District's WASTE NOT program.

Residents may drop-off their loose, clean pine needles, free of charge, seven days a week, at the Diamond Peak Ski Resort, 1210 Ski Way, through Aug. 16. Hours of operation will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The collected pine needles are used for local erosion control projects, making it important to recycle only clean pine needles. No pine cones, trash, branches, or stumps are accepted.  Please empty pine needles out of bags when dropping off at the site. Residents who recycle their pine needles will support erosion control projects, while reducing waste disposal to the landfill.

The curbside pine needle recycling collection week is May 25-29. Incline Village and Crystal Bay’s free curbside pine needle recycling collection service will be offered the last week of May. During this week, residents are able to place up to six bags of pine needles curbside, on their normal trash collection day, to be collected separately for recycling. Pine needles may not be collected on  a person's trash day but should be collected by the end of the week.

To assist collection, residents are being encouraged to use clear plastic bags for pine needles, or if using black bags, to label the bags for recycling. Labels for designating pine needle bags are available at the IVGID Public Works, 1220 Sweetwater Rd. and administration offices, 893 Southwood Blvd.

Residential collection service is limited to a total of one can and up to six additional  bags placed curbside each week. Residents are advised to only place trash or pine needles curbside, on their normal collection day. Additional materials (above seven cans/bags) will be collected and the account will be charged $2.22 per extra bag/can.

If a property owner has more than six bags of needles at any time, WASTE NOT staff suggests arranging for recycling drop-off at Diamond Peak. A special pickup service is also available by calling Waste Management at (775) 831-2971.

This community recycling program keeps hundreds of tons of pine needles out of the landfill. IVGID Waste Not’s Pine Needle Recycling Program is made possible by IVGID Public Works, Diamond Peak Ski Resort, and Waste Management.  For more information, please contact the WASTE NOT Hotline at (775) 832-1284, or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
