Lake Tahoe Review - Honoring Our Troops & Veterans

Sheriff's office to deliver gifts to veterans

By Staff Reports On 21.01.09

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will be delivering gifts and spending some time with the men and women residing at VA Assisted Living at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

“Operation Christmas Stand Down” was the brainstorm of staff in the Records Department of the Sheriff’s Office who wanted to do something to brighten up the lives of veterans after the holiday giving and visiting season stops.

Personal hygiene items, crossword puzzles, stationary, stamps, socks and hats are some of the things that will be delivered this Saturday.  Plans are under way to do this again near the Fourth of July.

Girls Scouts to send cookies to troops

By Staff reports On 07.01.09

Local Girl Scouts begin selling cookies soon after the holidays and the Girl Scout troops' theme this year is “Going Places.” This spring, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada would like to make their cookies Go Places, too: To local service personnel stationed overseas.

The Girl Scouts in the Incline Village, North Tahoe and Truckee area are asking for people to submit names and addresses of servicemen and women serving overseas during the spring of 2009.

If you have a family member or friend stationed overseas and would like a local Girl Scout troop to ‘adopt’ his or her platoon (or if you would simply like to help with a donation), please call Bonnie Dodge, the Sierra Tahoe Girl Scout Service Unit Product Manager, at (530) 583-3946.

Coming soon, the Lake Tahoe Review will feature each week a Girl Scout Troop and the local serviceman or woman the troop has adopted. Watch for it in Education or Honoring Our Troops & Veterans.
